Kootenay Advanced Manufacturing Sector Assessment 2023
In 2023, the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology and Selkirk Innovates developed a project exploring advanced manufacturing in the Kootenay Region of BC. Project results were just published in Brandon University’s Journal of Rural and Community Development.
Using a case study of the Kootenays, “Understanding Advanced Manufacturing in Rural Places: A Proposed Spectrum and Assessment Tool” explores the advanced manufacturing sector within rural contexts.
Dive into the findings to discover how this innovative model can serve as a diagnostic and planning tool, revealing place-based opportunities and setting the stage for targeted actions in rural areas. It’s a must-read for anyone involved in economic development, innovation, and technology in rural settings.
This article was co-authored by Jonnah Ronquillo, research intern; Dr. Sarah-Patricia Breen, BC Regional Innovation Chair in Rural Economic Development; Dr. Tracey Harvey, faculty researcher; and KAST’s Melanie Fontaine and Kathleen Ayre.
Thank you to the Discovery Foundation, Mitacs, and Community Futures East Kootenays for supporting this research.
