Welcome to BiodiversiTV in celebration of Science Literacy Week!

Science Literacy Week showcases the diversity of Canadian science and the culture it’s embedded in. Libraries, museums, science centres, schools and not-for-profits come together to highlight the books, movies, podcasts and events that convey the excitement and influence of science in our everyday lives. It’s about each and everyone’s unique relationship with science and how they live it.

BiodiversiTV Multimedia Learning: Highlighting Kootenay Biodiversity with a STEAM + Careers Lens

BiodiversiTV is a multimedia STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts & Math) + Careers learning experience for youth ages 10 to 18. From September 21 to 25, we will showcase four organizations (aka heroes!) working to protect biodiversity within the Kootenay region.

This back to school program was designed just for educators (and everyone who identifies as one in this unique time in history) to provide engaging, multimedia content to learners throughout the Kootenay region.

Why STEAM?

GLOWS is a program of KAST, the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology, and so it’s very important to us that our Science Literacy Week project includes digital literacy. Throughout the week we’ll be showcasing how STEAM is integrated into each of the organization’s we’re highlighting who are doing impactful work in protecting biodiversity.

Why Careers?

GLOWS purpose is to encourage Kootenay youth to pursue further education in STEAM. We do this by introducing youth to learning opportunities, engaging content, and inspirational people! BiodiversiTV will be our first program that showcases relevant education pathways, and a sneak peek into the career paths of local professionals doing amazing work in STEAM!

For Educators

With the directions from our Educator’s Toolkit you can spend time each day of Science Literacy Week, September 21 to 25, 2020, exploring Biodiversity with STEAM and Careers. A “What to expect” guide will be available September 16 to, 2020 to all registered educators, parents and community partners. Everyday we’ll highlight an organization working in our region to protect biodiversity in a unique way that you can experience with your learners.

For Community Partners

Science Literacy Week is a great opportunity for your organization to highlight the resources available through the Educator’s Toolkit, and supplement them with your own resources. Using our Community Partner Engagement toolkit (delivered on Wednesday, September 16) you’ll receive information and media to fully engage with your community during Science Literacy Week.

Download posters and flyers for your venue
Send an email to your community about Science Literacy Week
Host a Science Literacy Week event – choose a day between September 21-25 to engage with BiodiversiTV and offer participants activities from the toolkit. (Please follow COVID-19 Safety Plans outlined by your governing body)
Create your own Featured Faves list. Curate a custom list of books and audio books, podcasts, websites, youtube channels and music that highlights Science Literacy or Biodiversity and share it with your community.

Science Literacy week is a great way to celebrate the biodiversity of our region, the amazing careers available to those who are inspired by using science and technology to protect the planet, and the digital and science literacy recommended by professionals in our region.
