KAST’s Nelson Innovation Centre (NiC) is here to connect tech and knowledge workers, entrepreneurs and small businesses with the support they need to thrive.
NiC is the place where you’ll find your new best friend, mentors from around the region, and experts in the tech and innovation sector. You can chill in the NiC lounge, attend one of our cool events, use our private workbooth, network or rent the boardroom.
Nelson Innovation Centre started as a grassroots community-driven project and KAST is honoured to be building on this momentum by managing the project and seeing it come to fruition.
After years of hard work, consultations and funding applications, the Nelson Innovation Centre will be opening its door in the very near future.
Centrally located at the historic CPR Railway Station in Nelson, NiC will be accessible for innovators and professionals from Nelson to Kaslo, Salmo to the Slocan Valley and Castlegar to Rossland.
Phase 1 of NiC, our anchor tenant office space, was completed in September 2019. Phase 1 features 750-square-feet of renovated space for our anchor tenant, Mountain Culture Group, who have already made themselves at home and held some great community events.
“This is one of the most exciting developments in our 18 years of publishing,” says Mitchell Scott, Editor and co-publisher of Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine. “We’ve been looking to open up a space for some time, and couldn’t have imagined a more ideal location or initiative to be a part of. What the NiC is creating in the iconic Railway building will be a huge asset to the City’s creative and tech community. For us, it’s a chance to have more of a physical presence in the community, and also be more collaborative—both internally and externally.”

In December 2019, KAST was thrilled to put on Techmas: A private holiday party for the Kootenay tech and business community in conjunction with the Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce Business and Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine.
The event took place in Railtown at the Nelson Innovation Centre and Visitor Centre. We welcomed hundreds of people over the course of the night and on top of a robot santa, live painting, photo booth, beers by Nelson Brewing Company, MIDAS Lab Tech Market, DJ Ginger, Kootenay Coop cider, tacos and margaritas by Cantina Del Centro and a virtual reality experience — we were thrilled to offer tours of the Nelson Innovation Centre so the community could finally see an idea they’ve held dear for so long coming to life.
