This month-long, annual contest invites Kootenay students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 to imagine, design and illustrate a “contraption” that solves a problem.

KAST Youth encourages students to use critical thinking skills, design thinking, problem solving, creativity and pitch skills for a chance to win some incredible prizes! This is a great opportunity for your students to use their limitless imaginations, and to fully experience the reward of bringing their ideas to life through innovation.

As part of this contest, KAST hosts educational workshops for contestants to learn how to 3D Design for 3D Printing.

Teachers can also bring the competition into their classrooms and teach their students to 3-D design themselves and submit as a class. Teachers can also apply to host a 3D Design facilitator/instructor in their classroom who will instruct their students on 3D design and the contraption creation process.

The Kootenay Contraption Contest is generously sponsored by FortisBC and the Province of British Columbia.

Want to learn how to create a 3D design?

The contest is open to students in kindergarten to grade 8 and invites them to use their limitless imaginations to design a “contraption” that helps solves a challenge through innovation. This year’s winners will get to bring their ideas to life by 3D printing their very own design!

Your Challenge

Everyone loves home grown food or veggies from the local farmer’s market, it just tastes better! What contraption can you imagine to help grow food locally? It can be something for local farms, a community garden or even your own backyard garden bed or balcony box! Create a contraption that will make it easier to grow a big, delicious garden!

Rules

  • Entries must be received by 4PM PT on May 31st, 2023.
  • Contraptions must solve the problem using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art or Math.
  • A written description that explains how your contraption solves the problem is mandatory.
  • Digital media is accepted and must be submitted with a completed entry form.
