Meet 6 Artists whose skills meet where STEM and ART intersect.
May 15, 2021
When we explore the difference between STEM and STEAM we discover that STEM represents a modern approach to science and technology that focuses on solving problems through critical thinking and analytical skills. STEAM education explores the same subjects, but integrates creative thinking and applied arts into the equation.
Art and design is about creating and revealing innovative ways of problem-solving, integrating principles, and presenting information. By adding the elements of art and creative design to STEM-based thinking, GLOWS encourages youth to use both sides of their brain—analytical and creative— to become tomorrow’s best thinkers.

Meet the Artists
Jonathan Boreham
Founder, The Sound Fundamentals
After starting out as an amateur musician touring the UK, I took an interest in ‘the other side of the microphone’ and graduated with a degree in Broadcast and Audio Engineering. After a summer of touring the UK working festivals like Glastonbury & Reading, I took a 3 month ‘Ski Vacation’ to BC.
That was 13 years ago and I am very grateful to have continued my career on another continent, making memories and friends in every state, province and country. I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world working with some amazing artists; Chainsmokers, Diplo, Bob Dylan, Mumford & Sons, Barrack Obama, Zac Brown Band and many others. The adrenaline and buzz from each show never gets old!
These days I am involved in many festivals, concerts and tours along with loudspeaker designs, creative stage setups and music production in my studio.
Scott Matson
Founder, Northern Ultralight
Scott Matson is the founder of Northern Ultralight, a small company producing lightweight adventure equipment based in Nelson, BC. After graduating with a degree in civil engineering in 2014, he spent a couple of years in the workforce designing structural components for buildings. In 2016 Scott set off on the journey of a lifetime; as he attempted to walk across the United States. Traveling from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. Over the course of this 4,265 km trek he became hooked on “trail life” and the desire for more adventure was still burning strong by the time he reached the Canadian border, thus marking the completion of his first thru hike.
Being a natural born tinkerer and craftsman, Scott thought it would be a fun project to try to design and build his own pack to carry for his next trip trip. The initial backpack design was then refined over many months, and Northern Ultralight launched with its first product in mid-2018. It has been 3 years since launching his business and it has been jam packed with excitement, challenges, and countless learning opportunities.

Nick Marks
Lead Designer, birr agency
Nick Marks found his creative path at an early age while attending numerous art camps at the Museum of Beaux Arts in Montreal and taking several art classes throughout high school. It was his grandfather’s background in civil engineering and mathematics that led Nick to study architecture at Vanier College and blend science with art and design.
As an artist and maker, architecture was missing the tangible aspects to design. Nick attended Bishop’s University to study fine arts and quickly found a passion for graphic design. Nick moved West to snowboard and worked as a graphic designer in the ski and snowboard industry for several years designing ski magazines, trail maps, and gear review videos.
However, the yearning for working with his hands was strong, so Nick returned to study furniture making at Selkirk College in Nelson, BC. This program required math, science and artistic abilities.
Nick started Mona Design Company in 2015 building one-of-kind furniture, built-in cabinets, custom signs, and custom woodworking. His diverse background in art and design eventually led to more graphic design client projects and completed the circle back to graphic design. Mona Design Co. is a creative studio that is an extension of several creative pursuits from woodworking, graphic design, industrial sewing and illustration.
Currently, Nick works for birr agency as lead designer: building brands for companies, animations, print design, and illustrations. Creatives working in science and technology fields have the ability to problem solve in ways that make products and apps stand out with design.
