Applied Research & Innovation: Faculty Assistant - Research Assistant

The Applied Research and Innovation Department (ARI) of Selkirk College, Castlegar Campus is seeking a highly-qualified individual to serve in the role of Faculty Assistant – Research Assistant.

Working under the direction of the Director of Applied Research and Innovation and Faculty Researchers, this position will support ARI research initiatives with assigned work primarily related to the State of the Basin program, the Local Government research program, and other projects as they emerge.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertakes data collection, data cleaning and entry, qualitative data coding and/or quantitative analysis, report writing, and development of presentations
  • Keeps records and contributes to the completion of monthly, annual, and final project and program reporting
  • Supports, participates in, and/or facilitates research participant groups and project team meetings with external groups e.g. community groups, businesses, and project contacts as required
  • Contributes to knowledge mobilization and dissemination efforts via report writing and facilitation of extension activities
  • Contributes to proposal development and/or grant applications for program and project research funding
  • Supports student involvement in projects including research process training
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the supervisor and the Faculty Assistant –Research Assistant job description

 Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience working independently, and as part of a team
  • Initiative to maintain professional currency and ability to adapt to new technologies
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, including descriptive statistics and qualitative coding, is required
  • Excellent computer skills including use of Word, Excel, and others where required
  • Demonstrated interest in working with students and linking research initiatives to curriculum

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferably in a field relevant to rural development is required
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience undertaking social science research projects is required
  • Experience working with rural regions and with local government clients is required
  • Preference may be given to candidates who possess higher credentials and working knowledge of GIS technologies, software is an asset

This is a 100% short-term appointment commencing February 4, 2019 and ending February 15, 2020.
