FURTHER $25M DEDICATED TO RURAL CLEAN ENERGY PROJECTS

VANCOUVER – The Province will provide a further $25 million to develop innovative, clean energy projects in British Columbia’s rural communities through the Innovative Clean Energy (ICE) Fund, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.

“The innovative clean energy projects supported through the ICE Fund are helping communities save energy, save money and reduce their carbon footprint,” said Premier Campbell. “In addition to supporting local energy-efficiency, the new technology developed can be commercialized, helping build B.C.’s green technology sector, and seizing the opportunities of the growing low-carbon economy.”
In July, the provincial government announced the first 15 successful applicants to receive support from the ICE Fund. Approved projects representing bio-energy, geothermal, solar and other alternative energy sources shared nearly $25 million from the Province, representing about $80 million in total investment.

“We are concentrating this second round of ICE Fund projects on rural B.C. because we want to maximize the opportunity for residents across the province to benefit from locally-produced clean energy, generated by innovative technologies,” Technology, Trade and Economic Development Minister Ida Chong said. “All British Columbians, including residents in our many smaller communities, want to help achieve a sustainable and prosperous future for our province – so we are ensuring that the ICE Fund supports local economies in the province’s rural regions.”

This second round of ICE Fund projects will see approximately $25 million in funding to address specific B.C. energy and environmental priorities, as well as accelerating the commercialization of clean energy technologies.

Eligible proposals are welcome from anywhere in British Columbia, but the projects must be situated within the Northern Development Initiative Trust Region, the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust Region, and North Island-Coast Development Initiative Trust Region. However, all off-grid or unincorporated communities in B.C. are eligible to host ICE Fund projects.

The ICE Fund is open to applications from municipalities, regional districts, school boards, hospitals, First Nations, Not-for-profit societies, post secondary institutions, Crown corporations, public utilities and companies.

Supporting the BC Energy Plan and the government’s goal of electricity self-sufficiency by 2016 and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020, the ICE Fund will showcase B.C. technologies to the world and drive solutions to climate change.

Learn about Solar Hot Water and SolarBC

Solar hot water is a growing industry around the world and not just in sunny, tropical climates. Japan and Germany are currently world leaders in solar markets, yet our BC climate shows greater solar potential than both Tokyo and Berlin. In fact, the solar potential in Vancouver is only slightly less than that of Miami, Florida. Miami has greater consistency of solar potential from month to month, however taken across a whole year, Vancouver’s annual daily average solar energy production is only 8% less.

Solar hot water technology has the potential to be widely used in homes and businesses across BC. Hot water demands the 2nd largest amount of energy in our homes, after space heating and it represents about 30% of total energy use in our homes. A solar hot water system can meet approximately 50% of total hot water needs. Domestic solar hot water systems reduce the peak loads on electricity or gas heaters and so can reduce the demands on utility infrastructure.

Domestic solar hot water systems are designed to last twenty to forty years, minimize environmental impacts, and promote community economic development through the building of a sustainable industry economy.

The province of BC is investing $5 million in the SolarBC program to encourage the installation of solar hot water heaters in homes, municipal buildings, schools, social housing and First Nation communities.

Solar hot water systems reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about one tonne per year for a single family home using natural gas for water heating. The increased use of solar energy technology is part of a broader sustainable energy strategy that will help the Province reach its goal to curb greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020. SolarBC also supports the BC Energy Plan conservation target to acquire 50 per cent of BC Hydro's resource needs through conservation by 2020.

Over the next two years, SolarBC will be facilitating the installation of over 2,000 solar hot water systems in homes around the province.

SolarBC is proud to announce that they are offering a $1,000 point-of-sale discount to individual households on solar hot water installations. SolarBC incentives will be available from the end of June, and can be combined with an additional $500 from the ecoENERGY Retrofit Program and $125 from the LiveSmart Program. To ensure a high level of customer care, the discount is available on systems installed by contractors that are registered with SolarBC.

The SolarBC Residentail Project offers incentives only for systems installed by registered contractors. Accreditation helps to promote industry development, high quality system and installation standards, and to support high levels of customer service delivery to householders.

KAST will be hosting a CanSIA SDHW Installer Workshop in October, click here for more information.

New financing for small company technology commercialization

There is a recognized chasm in the commercialization of technologies especially in very small companies. It is the black hole on the 'research to reality' road where innovative and viable technologies get lost. Since the development step often lies outside the domain of traditional investment sources, many valuable technologies and ideas are needlessly shelved.

In an effort to address this situation, Precarn has allocated $500,000 in funds to advance technologies that show commercial promise. The Technology-Gap Assistance Program (T-GAP) is the conduit through which the funds are awarded.
